UAE Fine for overtaking on emergency lane

The Abu Dhabi Police shared a video on the social media which shows the drivers illegally overtaking the other cars using the shoulder of the roads which is the emergency lane.

As per the official tweet, the video was published in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Police Follow-up and Control Center and is a part of the "You Comment" initiative.

The using of emergency lane for overtaking is an offence which will get you a fine of 1,000 dirhams and six black points, according to Article No. 42 of the Federal Road and Traffic Law.

Police reaffirmed that using the emergency shoulder lane of the road to overtake other vehicles is dangerous as it could hinder the passage of emergency vehicles, potentially prevents them from reaching accident spots on time and will cost the lives.

The hard shoulder is mainly meant for emergency services and could be used for break downs for a short period. If your vehicle is break down you should call recovery service immediately and you can also call RTA so that they will send a patrol car which will come and stay behind your vehicle with warning lights until your vehicle is towed away.

The road shoulder must be left free for emergency service vehicles and should not be used for overtaking when there is heavy traffic.

If breakdown of a vehicle happens it is easy to move the vehicle onto the hard shoulder of the road which will make the traffic flow smoother in all other lanes.

Some drivers tend to sticking to the speed limit and quite often feel intimidated by other drivers

The motorists must not be aggrevise and should avoid driving right up to the bumper of the car in front and flashing lights. This should not be happening, since tailgating is prohibited by the law and will also attract a fine.

You might also get caught by a speed camera while doing so. Follow the speed limit and don’t be aggressive to other drivers and abide by the law.

Taking over a vehicle in front should only happen in the lane to the left of the driver in front. The threatening behaviour on the road is clearly unacceptable and will be seriously considered by the authorities.

That being said, if a driver finds that other vehicles are frequently overtaking them on the right hand side, they should also think about their own lane discipline, since it is incorrect to be driving in lane 2 or 3 if the right lanes are empty.
